Short along the line of fire —increase range input slightly, add powder charge if you were at the bottom of a bracket, or bump elevation per calculator guidance.Long —decrease range, reduce charge, or lower elevation.Left or right —adjust bearing on the map, fix traverse dial, remeasure if the original line was wrong.
Do not adjust two variables blindly. Change range OR elevation meaningfully, fire one correcting round, and read recon again. Random dial twitching burns shells faster than structured walks.

Walking rounds onto target

Star shells light the battlefield for observation and adjustment. Use them when orders specify illumination, when night or weather hides the target area on recon, or when you need spotter-quality visibility before committing high-explosive.
Stars do not kill armor by themselves —they reveal where to send the next killing round. Load star, fire for illumination, read the lit scene on recon or live observation, then swap to high-explosive or armor-piercing per Shell Loading & Gun Laying for effect on target.
Illumination timing matters on timed missions. Fire star early enough that spotters and recon catch the target before the light fades. Follow with correction math while the grid reference stays visible on your map pencil mark.
When to remeasure versus tweak calculator
If lateral miss exceeds what small traverse fixes explain, return to the map table. Bad initial measure lines cannot be fully corrected with bearing nudges —redraw the measure tool line from turret to target and regenerate the firing card.
If depth miss is consistent across two correction rounds in the same direction, suspect charge bracket error or calculator shell type mismatch before you micro-adjust elevation forever.
