The tactical map table at the center of your IRON NEST workstation is where most accurate fire missions are won or lost. The teleprinter tells you what to shoot; the map tells you where it is relative to your turret. The ballistic calculator only works if the range and bearing you feed it came from a clean measurement here.

This guide covers the grid, colored pencils, measure tool, and the habits that keep your clipboard values trustworthy.

The map table layout

Your map shows the battlefield around the nest with grid lines, elevation contours, friendly positions, and known landmarks. High Command references often arrive as grid coordinates or descriptive landmarks —“the crossroads east of the ridge,” “enemy battery near grid 47.” Translate every order into a precise point on this table before you draw a line.

Friendly units and your turret icon appear on the map. Always measure from your actual firing position to the target mark, not from a landmark you assume is close enough.

Colored pencils and marking conventions

IRON NEST gives you colored pencils to annotate the map during a mission. Use consistent colors so you do not confuse yesterday’s mark with today’s order. Many operators reserve red for active target lines and keep other colors for range reference marks or spotted enemy movement reported through the Teleprinter & Intel guide.

Mark the target intersection clearly before you invoke the measure tool. A fuzzy dot produces a fuzzy line. When intel updates the target position, erase or override old marks so you do not measure to stale coordinates.

The measure tool workflow

Select the measure tool and draw a line from your turret position to the target point. The game computes bearing and range along that line automatically. Both values copy to your clipboard for immediate use in the Ballistic Calculator guide.

The red pencil path described in community walkthroughs refers to this line-drawing step —when the line is complete, you receive the numbers the calculator expects. Do not manually estimate range by counting grid squares unless the game forces you to; the measure tool exists precisely to remove that error source.

After copying values, glance at the line on the map. Does it cross terrain that might block spotter view? Does the bearing make sense relative to the teleprinter description? Sanity-check before you leave the table.

Bearing explained for operators

Bearing is the horizontal angle from your turret to the target, expressed in the game’s compass convention. You will dial this value on traverse controls during Shell Loading & Gun Laying. A bearing error of one or two degrees barely matters at short range but misses widely at extreme distance.

When spotter reports give a bearing from an observation post rather than from your nest, convert or replot on your map instead of traversing to their bearing directly. Spotter geometry differs from turret geometry unless the report was computed for your position.

Range and grid scale

Range is the straight-line ground distance along your measure line. IRON NEST uses the map’s built-in scale —trust the copied number over eyeball estimates.

Long-range missions amplify measurement error. If the target sits near a grid intersection, zoom attention on snapping the line endpoint exactly to that intersection. Off-by-one-square mistakes are the leading cause of “calculator was right but shell missed” complaints among new players.

Linking map work to intel

Teleprinter orders and spotter traffic should converge on one map mark. When High Command sends coordinates and a spotter sends a correction, reconcile both on the table before measuring. The Triangulation & Spotting guide covers advanced plotting when multiple observation lines cross.

If recon photos after a miss show impact left or right of target, suspect traverse or bearing error first. If impact is short or long along the line of fire, range or elevation/charge error is more likely —but verify the original map line before you blame the calculator.

Map measurement checklist

  1. Read teleprinter order; mark target on grid.
  2. Confirm turret icon position on map.
  3. Draw measure line with the measure tool.
  4. Copy bearing and range to clipboard.
  5. Sanity-check line against intel description.
  6. Enter values in ballistic calculator without rounding.
  7. After firing, use Artillery Corrections if recon shows miss.

Practice in the demo

The Demo Guide recommends slow first passes on the map table. Repeat until copying bearing and range feels as automatic as reading the teleprinter. Only then add time pressure from the demo’s second mission or the First Firing Solution timed sections.

Deliberately draw a bad line once and follow it through to recon —watching the miss teaches more than ten perfect shots because you learn which step failed.
